Caledonia to Isla Pinos
17 March 2015
We had a seven mile motor up sheltered water and took a four mile jog out into the ocean (seas now 7’) back into the sheltered waters of Isla Pinos. As we were approaching we could see an anchored Panamanian patrol boat and were hailed and were advised that they were coming over to inspect our vessel and paperwork (they are always on the lookout for drugs this close to Colombia). The two officers reviewed our paperwork and during our conversation we learned that Lt. Jorge Lombardo (on the right) had been to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, (can you believe that Dawn and Lisa??) on a foreign exchange student program to learn english! It’s a small world!! We had a fun time visiting with them and are going to Facebook Jorge and hopefully see him in Panama City. Jorge had mentioned they were leaving soon and around 8:00 pm that night Bruce was sitting in the cockpit and yelled to me that they were taking off (their lights were on and getting closer) – I came out and realized that we were dragging towards them – they weren’t leaving!! They had began hailing us, so we started the engine and pulled anchor to reset it much farther away. Just prior to dragging for ten minutes there had been a 90 degree switch in the wind – this may have popped our anchor – UGH! Thank you Lord for not hitting the patrol boat!
