4/10/13 - We are leaving Thomas Island after 4 glorious days in this favourite place. We have spent 3 nights at Dead Dog Bay, on the southern side of Thomas Island. Yes I know hardly an inspiring name (which I think has come from nearby Dead Dog Island) yet it is one of the most idyllic bays that we have had the pleasure of spending time in. It has the most pristine beach (Sea Eagle Beach), and a sandy channel that always enables access to the beach regardless of tide – and we are back in 4 metre tide territory. You can stand neck deep in beautiful clear water on white sand and clearly see your toes as if in air. We also spent a night in Corrie’s Lagoon on the north side of the island – the more popular south east anchorage and where we spent a night on our journey up. Corrie’s Lagoon has 3 lovely beaches including Naked Lady Beach. Young Tom’s Island also borders this lagoon - where I caught the big coral trout a few months ago!
Yes we have spent the days fishing all around Thomas Island and with some success. Neil the fisherman has done particularly well landing several coral trout. On Tuesday night we had dinner aboard Billabong and we each had a coral trout – what a magnificent meal – fresh caught in paradise. Thomas Island has a special appeal with north and south anchorages, several nice beaches and it is as pristine as it would have been pre white settlers – no human structures or walking tracks. The location is also a little remote between Hamilton Island/Airlie and Mackay.
Yes we have again spent time swimming, beach fossicking and lazying around in the sun –just a glorious way to spend the day. A BBQ lunch on the beach was also enjoyed one day and as the bay is fringed by reef, there were some good snorkelling options.
And yes - we have had some rolly, bouncy nights however we are again getting quite used to moderate movement at this stage – it would be akin to sleeping on a flume ride at a water park (??) – though there is some solace at times in the rocking motion... In any event we need to get our rocking sea legs back for the journey south as we have very few (probably no) calm anchorage options which we have got used to in the Whitsundays.
This morning we got up early for a final swim and enjoyed breakky on the beach! We are reluctantly heading off to Scawfell Island which will offer some protection from the Southerly blow which is due early tomorrow morning.
