Annapolis Boat Show 2007
Well; we finally had an opportunity to see the new Admiral 40 catamaran and are we impressed. There are two big heads, both with separate showers, the entire boat has lots of head room and light, yet is still cozy. The executive model has everything including heat/ac, watermaker, generator, electric winch and on and on.
Gary and Lisa sailed across in a record 47 days (only stopping for 5 days) with hull #1 in order to get here in time. They shared a lot of helpful information and were gracious in giving us a tour and allowing Donna to measure for quilts, rugs and wall hangings.
Donna and I are not the only people who are impressed with what David Bird and Craig Moore of Admiral have accomplished with this new Angelo Lavranos design. We had a number of marine experts from the East Greenwich Yacht Club (EGYC) show up to assess the new design and to weigh in with their respected opinions. Past Commodore Fred Darlington and his wife Commodorable Jean, along with their sailing progeny Michael and Naval Academy Cadet Freddie (who are those two men coming down the dock with Fred and Jean?) pronounced the vessel sound and comfortable. This sailing family is knowledgeable about boats and the unanimity of their decision is welcome.
Captain/Dr. Jim Maguire looked in every bilge opening and inspected every system before declaring how much he liked the boat. He advised me to go ahead and buy it: which is good since we already paid for all but the last construction phase.
The Admiral 40 has been nominated for Cruising World Boat of the Year, and the judging team showed up while we were onboard. We left the boat to them and went for an excellent lunch at the Annapolis Yacht Club (they have the best crab cakes).
The most FAQ Donna and I get is "when do you leave?" We asked David Bird that same question and this is what he told us: "None of the delivery crew wants to be away over Christmas". The factory closes for a month every December 15th, so we are scheduled to go to Cape Town around January 20th and leave mid February. The boat is definitely worth the wait.
That is the plan; although our mantra is "we have no plans and we are sticking to them".
