Bienvenidos Puerto Rico!
28 March 2006 | Boqueron, Puerto Rico
We have crossed the Mona Passage!! I am very relieved and excited to be in Puerto Rico! We left Luperon last Friday at noon and made land fall in Mayaguez, PR on Sunday at noon! It was a long time on the water and our weather window did not turn out to be exactly what was predicted BUT we have made it to the other side safe and sound! The winds were higher than forecasted along the north coast of the Dominican Republic, up to 23 knots, we were expecting less than 15 knots. We actually pulled into Sousa, a small resort village on the north shore of the DR and anchored there for 2 hours from 5-7 pm. The winds have a tendency to calm down in the evenings around the DR due to the fact it is a mountainous island and the night winds are generally calmer than in the day. We had dinner at anchorage then continued on and the winds had in fact calmed down a bit and made for a more comfortable motor sail heading east. The first night we paralleled the coast of the DR and there were 4 other boats out there with us. Dreamweaver, Consort, Rose and Inspiration. It is nice to know others are out there and makes for a better night watch, I enjoy chatting with the others on night watch, makes the time go by faster! Our second day on the water we were still sailing along the coast of the DR! Daniel and Menno did see a Humpback whale, so that was very exciting! While under sail we read books, play Uno, poker, Yahtzee and bake! The boys had both fishing lines out but we had no bites over the 3 day passage! Our second evening we were officially in the Mona Passage, half way between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. It was smooth sailing while in the Mona, the swells were not as big as our previous time in the Mona, so I was very pleased! Sunrise on the third day we had the isle of Puerto Rico in sight! We pulled into Mayaquez at noon and cleared in through customs and immigrations Monday morning then raised anchor after lunch and headed the 10 miles south to Boqueron.
