Iguanas
09 January 2006 | Allens Cay
Allens cay is the home to the rock iguana. They are relatives of the iguanas that were used as dinosausr in the old horror movies! The few iguanas left in the Bahamas are now protected by law and there are two colonies of them at Allens Cay and Leaf Cay. The iguanas really do look prehistoric and they are red around their heads and have red eyes also! creepy! They have a third eye right in the middle of their head which is known as the pineal eye and is covered by clear skin. You can take the dinghy right up to the beach and they all come scurrying out to greet you! aagghh! They are vegetarians so we brought some lettuce, celery and plantains to throw to them. They run very fast and I stayed in the water close to the dinghy the whole time. The boys were all over the beach with them!! It was all very exciting! Daisy was left on the boat.
