Sailing on Exumas Sound
07 February 2006 | Rudder Cut Cay
We are continuing south, pulled out onto the Sound today and will go 22 miles to Rudder Cut Cay. Exuma Sound is dark deep purple-blue water and the sailing is wonderful (if the winds are from the right direction). We did have a swift motor sail south, it was nice to finally have the sails up and full of wind! The Sound has a steep drop off in depth and this is the best area to sail along for catching fish. We put both fishing lines out and wait. Daniel reads a book to us while we sail and then Menno takes over with Harry Potter. I am sitting at the helm and notice the depth sounder change from (+) 200 feet to only 9 feet, so I mention to the boys that a school of fish must be swimming under the boat. Sure enough, zing, zing, both lines go out! We all know what to do; Menno grabs one pole and Daniel the other, John helps me to pull in the sail so we can slow the boat down, Daisy runs all around the boat barking(she has not perfected her role quite yet!). We have two Mahi Mahi on the lines!! They are beautiful fish and put up a good fight, they jump high out of the water and their colors are spectacular- neon blue, royal purple and dark green. Menno is pullling in the first one and he yells "Shark" - A shark is chasing the mahi mahi which he has on the line!! No joke, it is a huge lemon shark which is trying to eat OUR fish! Menno doesn't bother to gaff it, he just grabs the line and throws the fish straight into the cockpit! Ha! Daniel has kept the line tight on the other pole and the fish is giving him a good fight but it manages to get off in the end. no worries, there are lots of fish in the Sound!
We go back to reading our books and zing, zing, here we go again! Two more Mahi Mahi and this time we land them both! Daniel does a superb job of bringing his fish in! wow, what a day! We stop fishing , our freezer is getting nice and full! We pull into Rudder Cut around 2pm, it was a 3-1/2 hour sailing trip or rather fishing trip! There are only 2 other boats anchored here. Menno and I remember this island from our first cruise and wanted to come back to explore it again. Dreamweaver and Seclusion (Pat and Ted) also came south today and they were successful as well with the fish! We were all invited over to Dreamweaver to grill our fish, everyone brought fish to share and we had a wonderful meal outside on the upper deck of Dreamwaver.
We did not have school today, due to the sailing and fishing. Daniel and John are completing another set of tests and it is going well.
