Cricket

Cricket and soccer are the two sports played in the Islands. We are all familar with soccer but don't know a thing about cricket! Well the Cricket Classics were being played so I thought it would be a great oportunity for us to go and learn about the game of cricket! England vs The West Indies. The England All Star team consisted of the legendary players of days gone by, well known names in the game of cricket. The West Indies team consisted of the All Star players from the different islands in the West Indies. We arrived at the field one hour early inorder to secure good seats in the shade, no assigned seating, general admission. The 1pm game started at 2pm, no problem, it is called GMT or "Grenada Maybe Time." We tried to compare baseball to cricket and learned some new terms. Baseball has a pitcher while cricket has a bowler, and catcher vs wicketkeeper, batter vs batsman, innings vs overs, bases vs wickets, runs worth 1 pt vs runs worth 1, 4 or 6 points, baseball games last one day while cricket matches can last up to 5-6 days!! Fortunately this game was only to last one day. Instead of eating hot dogs and pretzels we had fish and chips and pumpkin soup. We did have nice cold Carib beer though! I am glad we went, it was good to learn a little about the game of cricket however I think we all had more fun watching the people at the game! Cricket, being a "proper English" game made the antics of the Grenadans that much more enjoyable to watch. There was very loud carnival music being played and the Rastafarans were all dancing and yelling on the sidelines, a rowdy bunch, to say the least!! Whenever a fielder would miss or drop the ball they would blast out over the loud speakers a real special song- It had a carnival beat to it and the words were very simple- just F----! yes, that's right! So that is our story about cricket!
