Bread Day
18 January 2006 | Normans Cay, Central Bahamas
Today was bread baking day on Eira! Daniel and I baked 2 loaves and John and I baked 2 loaves! Their favorite part is kneading the dough and of course punching down the dough after it has risen! The bread is delicious! After baking the first 2 loaves I put them up on the cockpit table to cool, Daisy was taking a nap up there and lazily opened one eye and smelled the bread as I put it on the table. Didn't think anything of it....Menno goes up to the cockpit later that morning and all he said was, "Val, I'll have you deal with this..." Daisy had eaten one loaf of nice warm delicius smelling home made bread!! She had left a small bit of bread as evidence. We couldn't believe it! Grocery stores are far and few in the Exumas and they are very expensive. All food items are brought by boat from Nassau so the prices are double or triple the stateside prices. Highbourne Cay had a small store and we purchased a quart of milk, a dozen eggs and a loaf of bread- the cost was $15.00! As a result we started to bake bread and are now using our powdered milk as well! Trash disposal is limited on the islands. Since most of the islands are deserted there are no facilities for trash to be left. Highbourne Cay had trash disposal for cruisers and the cost was $5.00 a bag. We stuffed two bags into one bag and were able to get rid of a couple of bags there. We will throw perishible food scraps overboard. We did build a fire on the beach in Normans and burned all of our paper trash so now we have one trash bag left of plastic and cans. We also did some laundry today- hand laundry. After a busy day of boat chores the boys settled down to watch a movie and Menno and I settled down on the foredeck with a nice rum/pineapple drink to enjoy the sunset. In the distance we could hear the sound of a conch horn being blown, it sounds like an owl going whoo-whooo(John's description). In the water we noticed two very large spotted eagle rays gliding beautifully next to Eira. Aahh, yes it has been a lovely day.
