The Oregon and N. California coast
29 December 2016 | Brookings, OR
Rain and Sun
Our first two days will be our longest travel days, but the miles were softened by the beautiful scenery along the coast. We had a mix of rain (in Oregon) and sunshine (in California). We saw a lot of elk along the road. Hwy 101 was in much worse shape than last year, with many lane closures due to slides.
It was fun to visit Brookings. I love Oregon's little fishing villages. I have very faint memories of visiting my Dad (Ken Riley) many years ago when he worked out of Brookings on a fishing boat. They caught shrimp off the coast from Northern California to Northern Washington. It was also interesting to see the before and after photos from the 2011 Tsunami, in which the harbor and marina were destroyed. The new pilings are very tall!
Our RV park was on the bank of the Chetco River, just 1.5 miles out of town. Our next stop, Cloverdale, CA is nothing more than a stopover.
