San Juanico
16 February 2017
We headed out of the mountains and down to the beach via a "new" road, which is already falling apart! The incredible rains do a lot of damage to the infrastructure. This was turning out to be a longer drive than we anticipated, and Dave began to worry about fuel. We were down to a half-tank -- the lowest we've let it get on this trip and we knew there was no diesel available in this area. He kept looking at the fuel gauge, making me very nervous. We did some calculations and decided we should be able to make it. The nearest diesel is in Ciudad Insurgentes, about 2.5 hours from San Juanico.
This is a small village, definitely off the beaten path -- except for surfers. There are 10 points in this area separating different bays, and the surfers love the long waves that develop South of the points. Here we parked on a bluff with a fabulous view of the beach, the surfers, and the village of San Juanico.
The most fun was watching a guy surfing on a paddle board with his dog. What a hoot.
We ran in to our 4 friends from whale watching again. We've practically formed our own unofficial mini-caravan! We also met up with a young couple who we met whale watching and camping at Puerto Lopez Mateos, so that was really fun to meet up with new friends. We also met a young surfer who grew up in Newport and was coached on the JV baseball team by my brother. I was sad to leave this little piece of paradise, but we decided to start working our way back to Mulege to see the Rotary pig race on Sunday!
