Last sunset at Santorini

12 October 2016
On our last night on Santorini, we had cocktails by the pool and watched our last Santorini sunset, before heading back to Athens next day, collecting our luggage and boarding a flight to Abu Dhabi and then on to Melbourne.

What an amazing 5 summer journey on Ella May, starting in Portsmouth, through the canals of France, the coast of France and Monaco, Corsica, Sardinia, west coast of Italy & islands, the southern coast of Italy and part way up the east coast, across to Croatia and up to the island of Krk, back down Croatia, Montenegro, skipped Albania to Corfu, then via the Corinth Canal, islands in the Saronic Gulf, the Aegean, circumnavigated the Peloponnese and back up the Ionian to Corfu.

Perissa, Santorini

12 October 2016 | Yacht (not Ella May) anchored off Perissa
On our last day, which was very windy, we decided to visit the archeological museum which had some amazing artefacts removed from Akrotiri on the south coast. We then caught the local bus to Perissa on the east coast of Santorini to the black beach. It was rather strange to see black gravel on a beach, but it didn't seem to have any impact on the colour of the water.

Santorini

11 October 2016 | Riding the donkey up the hill
Once we had finished the volcano trip and got back to the old harbour, the queue to catch the cable car to the top was enormous, due to all the cruise ships. We had already walked down the steps to the old harbour, and knew it would be a long hot walk to the top, so we decided to take a donkey ride. It was a bit hairy, although it was also quite funny, as you had no control whatsoever over the donkey and I got my knee scraped against the wall as the donkey went very close at one stage. At least I think going up would be much better than going down!!

11 October 2016 | Walking down from the volcano
We decided to go on a boat trip across to climb to the top of the volcano, stopping off at some hot springs for a swim on the way. It was really interesting to see the volcano, which is still active and quite hot, and hear about its history.
