We saw a number of these Velella washed up on Vero Beach. I Googled Velella and You Tube has a great video on these jellyfish called"The Secret Life of Velella: Adrift with the By-the -Wind Sailor."
They have a number of different names. "By-the-wind sailor" is my favorite name for these sea creatures. The bright translucent blue air filled sack pictured above acts like a sail in the wind to move these jelly fish across open ocean water. Of course, like many jelly fish, you don't want to be on the receiving end of their tentacles. they pack some serious nerve toxins.
