Elaine/Warm 76
All cruisers are concerned that they set their anchor well and and do not "drag" (out to sea or stuck in shallow waters). After having set our anchor and spending some time in extremely strong easterly winds with a long easterly fetch, we knew were okay and set well. As planned, we pulled up anchor at 12:30 and reached a certain point and were going nowhere. Lawrence announced we were hooked on an abandoned mooring and its chain. He was finally able to pull up the end of the chain to find it hooked right over our anchor! With boat hook in hand he was able to find the old pick-up line, lift the mooring chain and pull it off our anchor! Now we only wish we had a picture of this whole scene; however, in such moments of excitement the camera is not first in anyone's mind! We are now anchored in front of the Coast Guard Station at Sandy Hook in preparation for tomorrow's strong easterly wind (AGAIN!) and still hope to depart around 0600 hours on Sunday for the 80+ mile stretch to Atlantic City. A nice bit of news, we just heard from Chris and Ed from S/V Freedom. They are arriving here this afternoon coming from the East River and will also depart on Sunday for an overnight to Cape May or Chesapeake City. It will be great to catch up with them if we are able. Now time to think about our nice dinner of Filet Mignon in a Madeira sauce with fresh mushrooms, baby gold potatoes and asparagus with hollandaise sauce. We'll take advantage of this nice evening meal because Sunday and Monday nights will require far less fancy dinners and rather meager at that!
