Calabash Creek

06 May 2016 | Calabash Creek ICW MM 341.7
Lawrence/ 81 degrees/ Sun & Clouds
The chance to use the tides on Sunday were just to good to pass up. We were also looking ahead to catching the tide on the Cape Fear River. So off we went again at 06:30. it was great we were able to use the tides almost all day. We had an easy run through the Rockpile. The tides really helped us out and we were into Calabash Creek anchored by 15:00.
Things got interesting later that night. You see both fishing boats and shrimpers use Calabash Creek. They tend to go by the anchorage early in the morning or often late at night. We were first into the anchorage, but we were joined by a trawler, sailboat and two catamarans. The sailboat next to us was a bit to far out into the center of the creek and you guessed it, that night a shrimp boat came right up on them with no way to get by. There was a lot of shouting and blasting of horns while the sailboat tried to get out of the way. They finally pulled anchor to give the shrimp boat the room it needed. It still had to come really close to one of the Cats! We had to leave our deck light on while the other sailboat re-anchored. Calabash Creek can be very dark at night. I have heard that boating can be a contact sport. Elaine and I are glad it didn't happen Sunday night.
Fair winds & Smooth sailing,
