Wrecker's Cup Race
25 March 2012 | Key West
Shirl/warm
Pirates are alive and well in Key West. Arrrrggg
I had the pleasure to experience the feeling of the chase while completing another Bucket List item. I sailed in the historic Wrecker's Cup Race. I was crew in the third race, in a four race series, it started in Key West waters Sunday, March 25, 2012.
Boats in seven classes reenacted the times in Key West history when wreckers would race to a disabled ship, rescue the crew and then lay claim to the cargo. The race ends at Sand Key and seven miles off of Key West.
Humm, sounds like a group of modern day pirates after the booty and grog. Guess not much has changed over the years. Arrrruurgg pour me more rum.
This turned out to be a all-in-fun race with Pusser's rum and Schooner Wharf Bar tabs as prizes. How did we do ??? Well in the name of fun we had a blast, but the race rewards were limited to a great sail and laughter among the crew. Did I say limited? It was the best and a good time was had by the modern pirates.
The web page has some great pictures and more details....
