Desolation Sound is appropriately named

Our journey was a huge success and we returned home safe & sound to Seattle on Friday July 18th. Everything was fabulous and more except fo the small detail of having absolutely no internet access. My ideas of what Desolation Sound would be like and what it really was like were quite different. I expected towns, harbors, internet cafes and some way to occasionally mooch off of someone's wireless access. Not the case we quickly discovered. The snow topped mountains were spectacular, the waters were as deep as the mountains were high and so warm and delightfully swimmable with sealife abounding and nature, nature, nature all around us. I will begin to capture our trip on this blog with photos and take you through our journey as soon as I return from the east coast visit with my family and have access to all of the technologies necessary to do what I intended to do. In the meantime, its great to be home, but we can't wait to be aboard Encore again soon.

sailing takes a lot more than just going with the wind

We've been packing and getting the boat ready for 3 straight days now. Still seems like there's so much more to do. As we were provisioning and finding places for every last supply last night until midnight, there was the most incredible lightning storm I've ever seen with huge spider-like bolts sailing across hundreds of miles of sky that were visible from our dock. We gladly took about 10 minutes out of packing to simply sit and watch magnficent mother nature at work. Lightning in Seattle, after all, is an extremely rare event. We took a before picture of the cabin in its state of getting ready to be provisioned and then another with what it looked like when we were done. We'll hope to post at least a few times a week if we can find internet connection, etc.

Shakedown Voyage a Success

We had a fabulous Memorial Day journey departing from our dock on Thursday afternoon and making our way up Lake Washington, under a total of 8 bridges, 5 of them drawbridges and through the Hirem Chittendem (aka Ballard) locks into the evening of the glorious Puget Sound. We overnighted in Port Madison, Port Ludlow and Port Townsend which was our furthest destination before returning to Seattle to once again travel beneath the 8 bridges and finally returning home to our dock Monday evening about 7pm. The girls had a blast and were hearty sailors amidst a bit of rain, a bit of sun and a bit of fog. Typical NW weather for sure.
