Anita asked how we got our propeller shipped to us in a remote lagoon. We like most boats arriving in French Polynesia had hired a "ships agent" to help us with our visa papers. For about $100 dollars the company offered to post a bond worth $1,500. per person on board the boat. Without this bond, we would have been required to deposit this bond at a bank in Tahiti for each person on board our boat. When we leave Tahiti, we could get our money back, but by the time you go through the exchange rate and various fees it would cost us a couple or few hundred dollars, so the agent is a bargain. The agent in turn is hoping you will use him for additional services. In our case that included receiving spare parts for our water maker, our anchor windlass, and finally our propeller. So guy that fixed our propeller in Australia sent it to our agent in Tahiti who sent it on the inter-island flight to Maupiti. We anchored Endless Summer right off the airport and I took the dinghy to meet the plane. Very low security situation!!
Next up? Outboard propeller parts mailed to Samoa. American Samoa is part of the US territories. The only US territory in the southern hemisphere. We hope to get some of the spare parts we need to fix our outboard propeller mailed to us by US mail in Samoa.
Thanks for reading our blog Anita.
Love, Steve
