Cambridge and Chincoteague

The trip north from Crisfield was slower than expected due to the significant fresh water run off down the bay. We logged almost 10 miles further through the water than over the ground.
Cambridge has a nice waterfront, and the municipal marina, although a little bouncy at times, is very secure. Thursday was rainy and windy all day, so we mostly stayed aboard.
Friday we picked up a rental car and drove to Easton and St. Michaels for shopping. Saturday we drove to Chincoteague Island, a resort community on the Atlantic side of the Delmarva peninsula in Virginia. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge includes Assateague Island where we spent several hours walking the trails through the marshland and loblolly pines. We saw lots of waterfowl of all types, as well as turtles, snakes, and a gray fox squirrel. The squirrel is an interesting subspecies that is BIG...about the size of a small fox. The famous Assateague wild ponies were visible from the road, and a few of them were corralled near the hotel.
We stayed over on Chicoteague Island, and Sunday drove down to Cape Charles and crossed over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel just for the experience. The day was perfectly clear, so both Capes as well as Norfolk and the James River were visible.
Today, Monday, we turned in the rental car, walked through the historic district of Cambridge (not much to see), and did some boat chores in preparation for leaving in the AM. We may or may not go up to Chestertown, but by next week at this time we should be back at Pleasure Cove Marina.
