First Day of Spring
31 August 2014 | Albert Bay
Penny
A paradise beach with a few palm leaf thatched huts and about twenty inhabitants. We were met by Sam who took us to his hut, he is a council official and wanted to to make sure we had checked in Nuko. When we were able to assure him we had he went down on one knee and bowed to each of us (we are not too sure exactly why). There is no road just a narrow 'goat' track over the hill to the next bay (Elisabeth Bay) at the far side of which is the dirt road into town. The main water supply from the river has run dry but the villagers are still able to get water from a well, and there is the luxury of a hot water spring. There is a cool refreshing breeze and we are protected from the weather by the surrounding hills and a reef. The coral is alive and well, teaming with fish. No mobile signal or internet, well and truly cut off. At night there no lights just the glow from umus along the shore.
First day of spring seems to have brought a change in weather, it is hot and cloudless. Perfect for snorking!
Sam is the oldest inhabitant and the unoficial chief, he keeps records of the yachts passing through to hand to police when he goes into town.
