We stayed at Hastings to break the journey and to enjoy the Spanish Mission style of architecture which is supposed to have replaced the original buildings after the 1931 earthquake. Unfortunately two of the main examples (including the Opera House) were undergoing renovations, I thought there was more Art Deco than Spanish Mission but whatever label you hung on them they were lovely buildings in a in a pleasant town. In addition it had a good supermarket with a really superb deli (the best in NZ so far).
The carving in the picture has had a modesty shawl to cover the rather large appendage, as had one of the female carvings. I thought this was all allowed in 'art' there are far more explicit items shown at Tate Modern for example.
