Birthday

30 June 2017
Kids and grandkids came around for my Birthday Catrin still busy with Marks family I generally go over every week but she does not often come here as Rhys 's school session is afternoon so that does not give much time. Mornings would have been much easier.
Chris returned on 14th seems strange having him back has put my relaxed scedule out

Still at Marsden Cove . Strong Westerly winds associated with sub tropical lows have delayed the departure of boats heading north . Things ease over the weekend and Chris hopes he may get 2 or 3 days sailing next week but winter seems to be arriving (although generally it is still warmer than here and the sea swimmable in). Meanwhile preparations for lift out and departure continue. Fixing a few things on the boat and the car serviced ready for return later in year. I keep telling myself that I do not mind going back to NZ before CHristmas but have not convinced myself yet.
Chris quite excited about the forthcoming first game of the Lions tour on June 3 for which he has a ticket. Lift out on the 8th and fly home on 13th. I think he has mixed feelings about returning and people keep asking why he does not go for residency but sadly we do not qualify.

One tropical low passed close to just after Easter and another is close today but not causing too much disturbance. Chris at anchor off Russell , Bay of Islands staying for a couple of days since the winds are strong north easterlies . Calming down mid week . Weather starting to cool down and fairly chilly at night so not much advantage over here? Who am I kidding he still seems to be swimming most days. He is a happy bunny though as he has found a shop that still sells proper digestive biscuits.

Weather in New Zealand seems to have been a bit mixed this month. Chris had a good week sailing Gt Barrier Island. Very settled weather with little wind . Plenty of good walking . Internet now available there so things are progressing although some of the villages less occupied than on our previous visit. This trip was followed by a week of exceptionally heavy rain but luckily he had returned to Marsden and was safely tucked up in the marina although a small drip from a hatch over the bunk caused irritation although he did not get much sympathy as I had said we needed to sort out window seal way back. He will just have to catch the drips until it stops.
He remained at Marsden Cove to watch the finale of the Six Nations and then sailed north for a few days , returning Friday before more bands of warm tropical rain cross the country this next week . Hatch leak seems to be sorted although he left kindle behind seems to have found plenty to read in the book swap.
Uneventful here but have been having a bit of a clear out.

Chris telephoned It is apparantly hot and sunny trying to make me wish I had returned with him. He had a good motor up to Opua stopping overnight at Whangaruru ,Whangmumu and Russell . Descaled the bottom on route , lots of hard coral and shell . Boatspeed increased by a full knot after this . Into marina and inner forstay refitted and drum of outer stay removed that afternoon . Genset looked at this morning and seems to confirm leak which hopefully will be warranty. All systems working so a fast daylight sail from Bay of Islands to Marsden Cove on Friday just behind a front with thunderstorms, Chris enjoyed it but it sounds as if I was better off at home. He arrived in time for a fishing competition with loud music in the marquee which kept him awake. A sign of age I think . Here the usual February weather continues and I still have not adapted to the cold.

Chris Leaves for NZ

Chris at Heathrow airpoft tonight . Flying tomorrow and back to Auckland . Expecting to arrive at Marsden Cove Monday . Plenty to do and then a few months sailing in NZ. Normally I would follow a week or so later but we have decided that I will have knee replacement in early July and stay here until then as I cannot do much on boat. Chris will come back here in time to look after me post op
He had good flight out and smooth tranfer by Mana Bus, he was even dropped off outside the car lot to pick the car. He sent me messages about spending time on the beach, trying to make me wish that I had returned with him. Feb 8 returns to Opua to get the refurbished furlers fitted .
