This fishing thing is getting expensive! I have two fishing rods and a pole spear. One fishing rod is for trolling offshore, and one is a spinning rod for casting and bait fishing. The trolling rod is the one I was using yesterday when I lost my beautiful lure. Today we went snorkeling on a coral reef just a short distance away. It was a beautiful patch of reef with lots of fish. I had a beauty lined up, launched the spear, missed the fish and the spear lodged itself into the coral, and the tip stuck in. No way would it come out. I was able to unscrew the spear from the tip and recover the spear, but no tip, no fish.
So tonight's dinner was the last of the fish we bought on Little Farmer Cay. But, cleaning up, we threw the fish remains overboard, and a huge splash followed. Fish!! So I got the spinning rod out, and with a neat arrangement of weight and hooks that I bought in South Carolina (where they use it for surf fishing for Striped Bass) I baited the hooks and dropped it in. Zzzzzzzzzing went the reel. I jumped for it and Snap!!! Hook, bait, weight, everything gone! But I'm not done yet! I have a spare tip for my pole spear, I have more hooks and a new lure, so I will get revenge!
But not tomorrow, as we are going to Georgetown, about 25 miles away, as we are out of just about everything. It will take us a couple of days to re-stock, get propane, a haircut, etc. so the fish will have to wait. On the radio I heard there are now nearly 200 boats there now. When we were there in December to meet Sarah, there were about 75. It is the Bahamian Mecca for many boaters who spend the winter anchored there, playing bridge, beach volleyball and stuff. Not for us, but it has the best grocery store in The Exumas. From there, we will head off further south to places that are more remote.
