Time for a Break
13 May 2013 | Charleston City Boatyard, Wando River, SC
Sunny, warm, light winds
No Problem!!
Night gave way to dawn and light easterlies, so we had a quiet sail through the day, heading north west to Charleston. By mid-afternoon we were motor-sailing in the entrance to Charleston Harbor against the strong out-going current, and like Lake Worth, thankful for a fresh breeze to boost us along. Calling Charleston Harbor Marina, we secured a berth and managed to arrive just at slack current, a great timing feat as currents sweep through the marina at up to 4 knots.
Nicely settled in we just enjoyed a quiet evening. Next morning we contacted the boatyard, about 12 miles up the Wando River, and confirmed our planned haulout. That done, we took the water taxi across to Charleston and had a nice afternoon of touring and had a great lunch at the Charleston Farmer's Market. In the evening we had an excellent dinner at The Peninsula Grill.
Next morning was preparations for haulout. We cast off at noon, again at slack tide, and headed upriver. By late afternoon, we were tied up on the boatyard ddocks where we finished haulout preps. Only two big items are on the menu for the yard; replacing some hoses in the heads, and sending the jib out for re-stitching. The sun has rotted the UV cover and its stitching, so it is flying in tatters like a fag, The sail material is fine, but we'll get the UV cover replaced to bring things back to "Bristol Fashion". Not that there aren't a few more things to be done to bring up the rest of the boat back.
Then on Tuesday we hauled out, and closed up the boat, but not before "bombing" the boat to rid us of some unwanted passengers we acquired in Mexico.
With that, off to the airport to PEI for a month or so. we'll be back to finish the trip north in late June. No posts until then.
