Master Builder at Work
Jules 07/09/2012
Here is the brains of our yacht-building endeavor plying his noble trade... With 20 + years of experience he's the best at what he does. For those of you not familiar with our team and are curious, there are 3 of us working full-time on Eva and 2 of us part-time.
Beautifully said Mr. Steinbeck...

Here is a passage from Steinbeck 's "The Log from the Sea of Cortez" that I find very apt...
3 templates down...

Here's a sneak peek at the galley with more faces up. Holes still need to be made for attaching, thru-hulls, and various sundries. The face around the door will be white, and against the keel well we're thinking of leaving it wood... there is nice whirls in the grain...
One more template to the pile.

Momma and baby Finn worked on a template today. It's the template for the sheet of 3mm ply which will line the hull between frames 15 & 14. Essentially it's the back of the galley's pantry. Finn slept entirely through this epic (routine) episode in boat building...(anything can be epic with a heavy baby strapped to your back)
Oooh what pretty chainplates you have!
Jules07/03/2012
Today we finished dry-fitting these...they cover the structural reinforcement for the chainplates. They are inside the galley on the port side and in the study/spare cabin on the starboard side. It's nice to finally see some wood in those areas...the black insulation minimalist look isn't growing on me...
Tales of plywood woe...
Jules06/30/2012
Since 2009 it has been very difficult to find good quality (BS1088) marine plywood. Since the recession, people here have been opting for the cheaper plywood, which mostly comes from Malaysia. There is a vast difference in quality (mistakes, gaps, poor glue) between the two, and we are finding it hard to compromise. We just purchased the last batch of Joubert and Plysorol in the country as far as we know, & who knows when more will be shipped in. But we think this batch should last us until completion... At least for the important bits anyway.
