Where was this weather the first week we were on Elixir? As we drove off the island, I saw that I had spelled Mount Desert incorrectly--good thing I don't teach any more. We are happily home, have had lunch with 2 of the grandchildren, and are getting reaquainted with keyboards and harps. Thanks to the Burketts for having us join the adventure and thanks to you for following. We do not have any unusual plans for the boat on our radar (nor is anything plotted on the GPS). Thus ends this edition of the sailblogs of Evensong.

Yet another beautiful sail. It all started with a loon calling at the side of our boat. We hauled anchor in dense fog and left under motor, feeling our way out of Roque which is really an archipeligo--a group of islands. After an hour or so, the fog thinned and wind came up and we sailed most of the 42 miles back to Dysarts marina at Southwest Harbor. Well, there was the lobster pot that we picked up on rudder, but the great Sailorsolutions Cutter got that baby right off. We are getting ready to drive home tomorrow having seen so many wonderful places. Thanks, Susan and Larry, for inviting us along. The photo is Cadillac Mountain and Somes Sound near our current location.

08/23/2008, Roque Harbor, Maine
We set out about 6 Canadian Time and motor sailed across Passamaquoddy Bay to the Channel into Eastport Maine. The Customs folks knew we were coming but made us all stand in line and come in one boat at a time. We managed to get out of Eastport by 9AM and sailed around Campobello Island where FDR summered most of his life. I can't describe the cliffs, clear water, evergreen trees, and the animals: You cant get a real picture of it but this is a WHALE in front of the Head Harbor Light off Campobello. They were everywhere as were the dolphins. We got into Roque Island, a private island with the only white sand beach in Maine. Although the flotilla is over, about half of us are in this pristine harbor.
