Fun on BI
08/09/2007, Block Island, RI

After the fog and the storm there was a beautiful day--actually 2. We did the usual shops and galleries, had lunch at Ballards and shuffled through the sand touching toes in the pleasant north Atlantic beach. Carrie did a good deal of shopping and we had dinner at the pub at Manases--excellent Mojitos.
Today we sailed back to Mystic with wind and waves off the aft quarter making it a tricky course to hold. Carrie enjoyed seeing the RI shore this time . We certainly enjoyed our week with her, even though Martha's Vineyard will have to wait till another time. We're all home again now, and enjoyed our little update on blog sailing with Evensong.

In New England with daughter as crew
Susie/ rain and wind, of course!

We tried to get our daughter, Carrie, out ot Martha's Vineyard for her vacation for the Boston Ballet. It was not to be. We got as far as Cuttyhunk and the weather reports didn't give us enough time to get there and back for her Thursday, Aug 9th return date. SHe did get lots of "interesting" experience, if not much sight seeing in new territory. There was no room in the mooring field so we anchored out at Cutty and had a nice swim. Saw Colbys on Thumper. Another boat came along and pulled our anchor which cut out the trip into town as we found another spot. That night was a 180degree shift and the usual anchorage circus. We held and spent the night watching and waiting.
With MV out of the picture we sailed to Newport and spent 2 nights in the harbor and enjoyed Fort Adams and the usual Nport haunts. The photo is Carrie at Newport. Yesterday we sounded our way out to our Smith Cove mooring in Great Salt Pond, here on BI. We could see NOTHING and Gene sounded the conch horn, I did "securites" on the radio, while the radar and Carrie kept watch. With the storm that is going through now and the 20 foot visibility of yesterday, we certainly are glad to have this club mooring. It is clearing and we will go into town this afternoon. This blog is for all of you who have kindly told us you missed it. I'll do another tomorrow.

We packed and cleaned and packed and packed...... until Tony came with AJ in tow. It was amazing how much AJ has grown as he marched down the companionway. Our friend, Tom, came and between the truck and Tom's car we got everything off the boat and into a vehicle--including those collapsable bikes that we never used. We got home to our wonderful house which niece Kelly had kept safe and clean--to toilets that flush, laundry without quarters, and a bed that lets us get out from the sides. I spent all afternoon with mail--still many piles--and began the laundry. Gene's sister, Paula arrived with "Welcome Home" balloons and we went to Olive Garden. We go to see AJ's baseball game tomorrow and Meagan's scrimmage. It is wonderful to be back. We thank you all for following our blog and sending us such great feedback. You will never know what that connection did for us on days when things were breaking or the weather was rotten. And so from land, this is the 1st mate on SV Evensong--Over and Out.
