Great sail, great town
08/22/2008, St Andrews, NB

This is a wonderful town! We have walked to historic sites, had dinner in an historic hotel, the Algonquin, talked to lots of shop keepers and crafts folk, and generally fallen in love with the people and feel of Passamaquoddy and St Andrews. We are on a mooring in the harbor along with the other 25 boats. Bebe Chamberlain, the Wharfinger, came out in his skiff to put our lines through the mooring. He has done this for many years and is a great welcoming committee. A Wharfinger is like a Harbormaster but he can't carry a gun. BeBe doesn't need one. The tides here are over 30 feet. and the entire view changes continually. It is very clean and the weather is beautiful. So here is my best sunset ever.

Back through the Falls
Susie/ warm, great breeze, sunny
08/21/2008, Bay of Fundy

We came down the St John on a great NW breeze with the jib out and sailed into Brothers Cove on the Kennebecasis River to anchor opposite the RKYC. The Banquet was lovely at the YC and the Commodore had some great stories about their racing cup, and 106 year history as one of the 10 Royal Charter YC's in Canada. At 3:45 Am we hauled anchor and queued up with the other 14 boats for the 5AM tidal slack at Reversing Falls. It sure is different in the dark! After we went through the sun rose on St John Harbor and we motored and then sailed to Letete Passage in time to catch the slack there. At full, the current out of Bay of Fundy and into Passamaquoddy runs at 8 knots. It was about 3 when we went through and into the Passamaquoddy bay with bright sunshine and a great NW to W breeze. The Bay is very large with such beautiful scenery. BEST OF ALL there were dolphins (of course no pics), seals, and lots of whales spouting and diving. Larry didn't want to get too close but we watched for over an hour. There had to be 5 or 6 of them. God is amazing with creation. We also saw some cliffs with caves that made me thing of "Pete's Dragon" which was about Passamaquoddy. St Andrews is gorgeous and I wish I could put all my pictures on it. This one is the darkness as we went through the reversing falls.

New Brunswick Capitol
Susie/ RAIN
08/20/2008, Fredericton

We boarded a bus with about 25 of the cruisers in the rain and headed to Fredericton, capitol of New Brunswick. It, too, was heavily settled by Loyalists from the other colony (us). This town has a deep commitment to history and had young people stationed in costume to discuss its garrison from the 1820 point of view. They have turned part of the garrison into craft shops which were excellent. As we got off the bus we heard bagpipes and saw red coated troops. No, not quite the same as our recent adventures in London, England, but a changing of the guard, nonetheless. They were reviewed by the Admiral of the Croatian Navy who was visiting. We also met some folks from the Welsh mens choir who had sung at St Alban's Cathedral 2 days after our choir finished in July. The world gets SO small! Gene and I couldn't pass up a good local pub with local beer and great sandwiches, followed by a tour of Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton. A lovely church that looked oddly familiar. The day ended back at Gagetown with a dinner at the marina and discussion of how we will pass back over Reversing Falls in 2 days.
