Mud

Thick, gooey, sticky as glue, mud makes for great holding here along the windy, tidal East Coast. You can feel confident when your anchor sinks and sinks until it's completely submerged, that it won't budge when 'bullets' funnel down steep hillsides and escalate across the bay. Even then, you can sleep easy.
But hoisting anchor can be a time consuming process and takes a bit of finessing. Our routine is for Tom to spray the chain as it emerges from the bottom while I motor slowly forward, turning a little to the left or right according to his hand signals until we gradually tease the anchor out of the goo, releasing it from an underwater tug of war with the seabed.
If it didn't smell so bad it might make a nice mud mask. Cooling, refreshing, completely organic, rich in minerals and proteins... all it needs is to be scented with a nice fragrance and packaged up in pretty little bottles. A bit of clever marketing, images of coral gardens and turquoise water of the Great Barrier Reef - it could be a big seller!
