Close Call With Plan B

We came so close to implementing Plan B last night that while I couldn't see Morris Island in the pitch dark, I could almost smell it. We were that close. But in the end we decided that even though our charts have been reliable and there were relatively few hazards to concern ourselves with at the anchorage, anchoring in the dark - particularly at a place you've never been to before is never a good idea. We had made great progress up the Peninsula but the weather forecast was sounding a bit grim so we thought we could tuck in at Morris until the forecast improved. The Peninsula from Cape Melville up to Cape York is called the 'Horror Stretch' by boaters looking to take refuge in a comfortable anchorage to wait out weather or catch up on rest. That's because there are so few suitable places to stop along this long expanse of coastline. Morris is one of those few. But as luck would have it we've found sailing conditions to be just fine today, and if all goes according to plan we should reach Escape River by early morning. There we will wait for the rising tide to sail with the 4-5 knot current around the top of the Cape. The coastline up here is supposed to be beautiful - red hillsides and white silica sand beaches, but they're difficult to appreciate because of the 'trade wind haze' that hangs in the air, reducing visibility somewhat and cloaking any semblance of color in the landscape. Never mind, we're entertaining ourselves with conversations with the occasional cargo ship and commercial fishing vessel to a)ensure they see us and b) that they're aware of our course line to ensure a safe passing distance. Things are good - just more sleep before reaching the top!
