Guess who.
Our first night in Greece! I am used to waking at first light, which as soon as the sun is up, is brilliant bright sunshine. The clocks are an hour forward now, so sun up is just before 7, not before six as previously. But this morning we were rudely awakened by the crew of an Italian boat two along from us,who came in yesterday. We assumed they were part of a yacht race organising team, and we guessed right. Instead of being woken by the daylight, we were woken at 6am by Italians chatting very loudly, then the long blast of a foghorn to signify a boat crossing the finishing line. There was a yacht race from Brindisi to Corfu, and the finishing line was just outside the harbour opposite where we were moored! There were 32 yachts in this race, so the foghorn went off 32 times between six and ten am!
So as I was awake early, we had coffee then went for a walk up to the old Byzantine castle in the village. We found a lovely shady path through the olive groves with wonderful views over the sea, a great sight of all the yachts with their spinnakers raised!
Today I am going to buy a snorkel and flippers, which are always useful to have on a yacht in case you need to dive down to check the anchor or inspect the propeller. I also need to try and find some of those reflective sunshade thingies they put on car windscreens. It is so hot sitting in our cockpit, as it has a half-shelter with a type of windscreen consisting of five large panes of glass, which is a sun trap! I am also going to find out about a local bus to Corfu town, which is about 14 miles away.
So a very nice first day of our Greek interlude ......
