Rainy Day

12 December 2014 | La Cruz
The anchorage in La Cruz has been kind to us and the roughly 50 other boats anchored out since we arrived nearly a week ago. Even the afternoons have been calm, unlike two years ago when we were confined as all the boats spent the afternoon straining on their anchors in 35 knot winds. That is until this morning when were awoken to the sound of rain! This is the first time we have ever seen rain in the winter in all the years we have been in Mexico and wondered if it was related to our purchase of 4 new solar panels?
Soon we were up and closing hatches and portholes but still the rain found its way in, revealing a whole host of places where the water could seep, drip and trickle inside the boat. Luckily it was easy to mop up and we were glad to have fresh rain water instead of sea water inside the boat. Sadly, with the overcast skies our newly fitted panels yielded zero amps to our battery system.
Accompanying the rain was the wind, with strong gusts reorganising the fleet as everyone stretched to the end of their chain. For some boats this brought them uncomfortably close to their neighbours necessitating a move to another spot. As it became light everything looked different but when we checked our position we were only 60 feet from our anchor mark. It can be quite misleading when other boats have stretched out on their chain and for a while we did think we might have dragged. Happily, we are just becoming accustomed to a slightly different perspective of the anchorage as well as a refreshing array of newly positioned neighbours.
By mid morning the rain had stopped and all around the anchorage we could hear people pumping out their flooded dinghies, as you can see we didn’t escape this chore!
