Fort Delgres
22 February 2015 | Basse Terre Guadeloupe
A little bit of history about the fort. The fort was built in 1605 by Charles Houel who was governor and lord owner of Guadeloupe and was known as Fort Charles. The fort was extended twice during the 17th Century and has great views along the coast of Guadeloupe. The fort has recently been restored and in 1989 was renamed Fort Louis Delgres. It is now a historical museum in honour of the military officer who fought many wars against Great Britain, Louis Delgres also remembered for his efforts to abolish slavery in the Caribbean. Within the fort walls a memorial has been built to honour Delgres.
