A sleepless night!
24 June 2017 | Enroute from Fiji to Noumea
Bernie
Day 2 and 429nm to go to Pt Moselle in Noumea. Last night the wind decided to go AWOL. First the direction changed 60 degrees and then the speed gradually dropped to just a few knots. The sails were useless and were slatting around as the boat rolled in the swell. The jib was furled and I waited to see what would transpire. In the no moon darkness I could make out a big black cloud over us and suspected this was the cause of the lack of wind. There was a light sprinkle of misty rain and the wind continued to fluff around. After a couple of frustrating hours of adjusting sails and trying to get the boat moving towards Noumea, the wind slowly started to return to the direction of three hours earlier and the speed picked up to 10 knots. That was my midnight to three watch and I can say that Damien and Joe had very little sleep while off watch.
Joe is slowly finding his sea legs and is eating and sleeping well, although he admits that taking a shower in the confined space of the toilet and shower was nearly his undoing!
