Anchored inside a volcano

Today we anchored in Lolowei bay after spending an evening in Vanihe Bay just over the hill from here. Yesterday we sailed across from Surundu Bay a 40nm beat and experienced quite a frustrating day of sailing, with the wind speed continuously going up and down as well as the crazy sea state! Once we were in the lee of Ambae Is it settled somewhat, but in the end after numerous sail changes we opted to motor sail. Ambae is a very steep island and the people are known as intellectuals, 80% of university students in Vila come from Ambae. Entering Lolowei Bay is quite spectacular as you pass over the eroded rim of a volcanic crater which is quite shallow but has very high sides enclosing more than half of the bay. With our 2.2 metre draft, it was important to ensure we entered on the upper end of the rising tide. The water is very clear, so easy to see the volcanic rock as you pass over it it. Once inside it is deep and a great place to have a swim. Lolowei is the main village with a hospital, a few small shops and schools. On Sunday two twelve year old local boys Terry and Wanga took us for a walk to an inland crater lake and on the way,Terry proudly showed us his gardens where he grows Taro, yams and corn. He works in the garden each day after school... quite industrious for one so young. Both boys accompanied us back to the boat keen to see our house on water. We gave them a drink of chilled orange juice....a totally new taste sensation for them..they loved it!
