Arki Island
15 August 2012 | Port Augusta
Early morning at Port Augusta.
We couldn't resist visiting this anchorage, as we had spent two years living in Pt Augusta, Australia in the 1980's. In some ways it was similar being dry and barren but more rocky than it's aussie namesake. Amongst yachties visiting the area it is a coveted anchorage offering complete protection from the Meltemi wind. However it can only take about 8 boats so we were extremely lucky to have a boat leave just as we entered the small harbour. The village is small and seems to rely on the trade of daily tourist boats to dine a the two tavernas and browse and buy at it's only store which was full of upmarket beachwear and local souvenirs. We enjoyed a quiet two days here and used our bikes to ride to the highest point of the island, which offered fantastic views of the group of small islands south of Arki, where we counted over twenty yachts at anchor. A very popular area to sail with not much distance between anchorages.
