Sightseeing the Ile des Pins

18 June 2009 | Noumea
Dianne
Our sixth day on the Ile des Pins and still enjoying its beauty. We did a circular ride of the island on Tuesday and discovered some amazing caves or Grottos as they are referred to here. The caves were a mass of limestone stalactites and often set well within the forests of tropical greenery with wild impatiens adding a splash of colour. There was an 'Honesty Box' situated at the entrance of the main cave asking for an entry fee of 200 franc per person..a very trusting community! Yesterday we walked with our friends from Freycinet II to the top of Pic Nga with an altitude of over 200 metres, so a good workout but well worth the trek when we finally arrived at the top. We were greeted with fantastic views back towards Noumea and to the south of the Ile des Pins. The underwater reefs were quite evident, especially around the many small islands which are completely covered in pines and surrounded by beautiful turquoise water. Today has been washing day/emails and a few boat chores. Bern cycled to Vao the small capital village of the island and was pleased to discover an ATM so we can continue to buy our daily baguettes. He was also able to purchase some beer at the local Alimenation (grocer) 1% alcohol and the only variety available on the island. Possibly an effective way of ensuring sobriety within the local community! We may stay on a few more days here depending on the weather.
