Finally able to go in the water!

13 April 2010 | Cabo Cruz, Cuba
Ralph
We left Marea de Portillo after the Guardia cam back out to the boat to "clear us out". They brought their sniffer dog with the again, made some notes on our "Despachio" and off we went. There was no wind for the whole day, so we had both motors going, but we still made good time and arrived at Cabo Cruz at around 3:00pm. I was a little concerned about the entrance to the anchorage, but it turned out be very easy. Everything is marked very well and our guide prepares us well. In fact things are marked MUCH better than in the Bahamas and they use the "Red right returning" system, so everything is good.

The Calder guide notes this place as one of the pretties anchorages in Cuba, and I can see why. To the south of us there is a long reef that extends 3 miles out from shore and to the north we have mangrove trees. The waves are constantly breaking over the reef, so it is nice and calm here in the anchorage. We are anchored in about 17 ft of crystal clear water with great sand holding. Karen is in her glory - there are conch everywhere! We are going to go snorkeling today along the reef and see if we can get some lobsters for dinner.

We are going to move again tomorrow to string of islands where we anticipate some awesome snorkeling and hunting and probably spend a couple of weeks just poking along.

The picture is of the village of Cabo Cruz - it does not look like much, but we have not gone into town and we probably won't.
