Stormy Weather

28 May 2010 | Isla Providencia - 13.22N 81.22W
Ralph
We have been hanging pretty low the last few days and taking it easy. The wind has changed from the usual east winds to the south / south west. The anchorage has good protection except from the south west. There is probably 250 miles of fetch to the south west, so if it blows hard from that direction we have a problem. Last night we went out to hear some live music at South West Bay. We had seen the advertisement for this in the Chiva (bus) and along with a couple of other cruisers, decided to go. They had advertised that the music was supposed to start at 7:00pm, but we suspected that was not going to be the case. I think they actually started at around 10:30. But a strong squall came rolling through, 15 minutes later, sending everybody running for shelter. We found our driver and made our way back to town - the rain was really coming down. When we got back to the dock, a local was watching our dingy's, as they were getting pushed underneath the dock and could have got smashed up. (I have to go into town today to find him and thank him properly) We got soaked on the short dingy ride back to the boat and putting it up on the davits was also a challenge with the big waves rolling through and the dingy half full of water. There was also lightening going on and it was CLOSE. Another boat in the anchorage dragged last night during this storm and had a lot of problems trying to get reset. They said the wind was blowing up to 35kts and the rain came down real hard so you could not see 20 feet in front of you. This was probably the worst conditions that we have been out in, but we managed just fine. And Five Islands did not seem to mind at all. We did get to test out our silicon job around the salon windows from a few days ago and it seems to have stopped the leaks. A bright side to everything.

Today we are going to Manchenelle Bay with a bunch of the other cruisers. We had stopped there when we rented the scooter and really liked the place, so it should be fun. Again there is supposed to be live music, but it probably won't start until very late. We will have to see what the wind does today, but we still have to worry about squalls.

The weather forecast does not look good for heading south until at least next week Wednesday. And even then, the winds do not look that strong and it may require a lot of motoring.
