Peaceful and quiet

29 November 2010 | Bay of Cholon, Colombia
Ralph
We have been enjoying the peace and quiet of Cholon after being in the busy harbor of Cartagena. We are now looking for a weather window to head back to Panama. There are numerous boats that are headed the same way, so there is no shortage of weather forecast information available. The bad part is that it does not look there will be a good opportunity to go for at least 7 or 8 days. So that means exploring more of Colombia. I am trying convince Karen that would should make a quick trip back to Cartagena, but so far she is not budging. On Saturday, we took a dingy ride to the town of Baru. The trip over was very cool as a couple of times you are following narrow channels through the mangroves. The town was much larger than I expected - we walked around for a couple of hours and we did not see it all. The town is very poor and I am not sure what supports these people other than the fishing industry. They had a couple of Tiendas that were fairly well stocked and we bought some fresh Camerones from the place where we tied up our dingy. We paid 18 mil for a kilo - which works out to about $4 per pound. Our friends on Salanage also bought a whole tuna, so Saturday night we had a seafood feast on Five Islands - It was delicious.

The bioluminescence in this bay is unbelievable. At night time, anything that disturbs the water causes it to light up. Our friends on Salange like to go swimming at night to see it. I am not quite that brave, but taking a pee over the side of the boat makes for brilliant light show.

Today's picture is for my family back home in Manitoba. We saw these peanuts and just had to buy them. I am not sure what the name means here in South America, but we thought is was pretty neat to be eating Manitoba peanuts.
