08 December 2010 | Isla Pinos, Panama
Ralph
We arrived here at Isla Pinos on Monday morning at around 8:30am. We traveled 154 miles and averaged 6.3 kts and traveled for just over 25 hours. We sailed most of the way and in general it was a pretty good passage. We only turned the engines on for the last 8 miles as we were going dead down wind so we had to roll in the jib and the wind had died down, so we motor sailed the last little bit. Our batteries needed the juice anyways.

Isla Pinos is quiet different that the islands we saw in the SW San Blas - there is a lot more elevation on this island. And the people seem a lot more friendly. We have had numerous Kuna's come out to the boat, but they mostly just wanted to say hi. One Kuna (David) invited us to come to the village, so we went in yesterday afternoon and he took around to show us his village. It is amazing to see how these people live. He showed us the congreso hut where they meet every night to discuss any issues that may have come up that day. All issues or problems are brought before the congreso for them to review and decide an outcome - even marital problems. We also met the chief yesterday as we were walking around. Today is Mothers Day here so the men do everything in the village and the mothers have the day off. We are invited in, but not sure exactly what is going to go on. We also saw a guy carving a new ullu, which is a dugout canoe made out of a large tree. David has just made a new ullu and it has a few spots where he needs some epoxy to fill in some holes. So if it stops raining, I think we will be going back in to town and helping him repair it.

It has been raining here a LOT. And when it is raining hard, I am sure it is raining inches per hour. The good thing is that we are catching water off our new bimini and putting it into our tanks. I can't run the watermaker as the water is too dirty from all of the rain. There are far fewer boats here than there was in the SW San Blas. I am looking forward to working our way through these islands....
