We're takiing a break

We made it to the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club today. We're so far ahead of schedule that we decided to spend a 4 or 5 days here. Its a nice place with friendly people. We're on a mooring here, but it's only $20/night with access to showers and of course a bar....lol. Water and laundry are also available. We got a late start this morning so about 10 miles out, the tide changed so we were motoring against a 4 kt current. When you are only going a little over 6kts, it slows you waaaaaaaay down. But, learning has occured....I'll pay more attention to the tide tables in the future. The yacht club is having a party Friday night and we were invited so that should be fun. Also one of the members has made the same trip we are planning many times, so tomorrow he said he would share any information he had. I'll be sure to grap a pen and paper......TTFN.

Isn't there a line from "The French Connection" about "still picking your feet in Poughkeepsie?"? Well, are you? Do you have a copy of Eldridge Tide and Pilot? It's printed on paper and everything... no batteries required. I've been vicariously enjoying your adventure - clearly you've been enjoying the ride. Here's to more fun to come!
A real sailboat again!

We finished rigging and wireing the boat thiss morning around noon. We got fuel and had to buy and install a new starting battery, so didn't get out of there till around 2 so we decided to spend the night in an anchorage we saw on the way in here. All the solar is back working, so we're fat, dumb, and happy swinging on the hook with the Catskill Mountins as a view out the stern. Learning how to dael with tides and currents has been a learning experience. Locals think nothing of it, but us flatlanders are still learning. Back home water runs only downhill, but that's not the case here. Tomorrow we plan to go to Poughkeepsie to possibly meet a fellow sailor who read about us and e-mailed us. Should be a good time. Well, the Olympics are on, so.....TTFN

And then there was Bob....

We got into Waterford on Saturday around 2PM. It was hot and humid, but we needed to gat laundry done so we walked into town to find a laundromat. While the clothes were washing, we went to an airconditioned bar and had a couple cold ones. When we got back to the boat we saw a bicycle rider come in and started talking. We had biked from Cleveland to the end of the Erie and was heading for the coast. We chatted a bit and then went to bed. Sunday rained in the morning, but cleared up around 3PM. Bob (the cyclist) had met a couple other locals and they invited us for cocktails at the local Irish Pub.....We met there at 6PM and to make a long story short, stayed waaaaaaay to long. Not that we hadn't had enough, we invited them all to the boat for a nite cap......that lasted into the wee hours, We all had a GREAT TIME and really enjoyed their company. Monday morning came way to early, but we had to get going. We left Waterford and traveled down The Hudson until neither Vicki or I could stay awake any longer. We pulled off into a creek feeding into the Hudson, dropped the anchor and went to bed early. THis morning we left there around 6AM and got into Catskill about 9AM. THe people at Hop-O Nose Marina were there waiting for us, so we got right to the business of putting the stick back on the boat. The process went well. After the mast was stepped, we rigged the boat and got the sails on. All is done except tomorrow I need to reconnect all the wiring through the mast. It's been a long day so....TTFN

We got into the Waterford around 2PM Saturday. The Flight of Five locks went well. It's the largest vertival drop in the distance in the world. As always, the Lockmasters were friendly and helpful. Waterford is another boat friendly community. Today there is a farmers market here on the waterfront. You can stay here as is most places for free, except here they charge for electric and shower facilities, but $15.00 per day isn't bad. It's rainy again today, so we'll sit here another night and head out tomorrow morning. We'll go about 1/2 way to Catskill, then in there on Tuesday and become a real sailboat again....TTFN
