Another Nice Sail and Prickly No Go
13 August 2011 | Mt. Hartman Bay, Grenada
Jeff
On August 12th we left Port Louis Marina in St. Georges, leaving those wonderful shower facilities behind, and set sail bound for Prickly Bay, Grenada. Prickly Bay is on the extreme southwest corner of Grenada near the airport. We decided to give it a try since in 2001 we did not anchor there. From St. Georges we sailed southwest on a nice reach in 10-15 knots of wind and no sea to speak of since we were on the leeward side of the island. Once we rounded Pt. Saline, Grenada's western end, our point of sail changed tooo - wait for it - a beat. I'll bet you guessed that one. It was actually quite a nice beat since the wind was still 10-15 knots and the seas were only two to four feet. The biggest problem for us was dealing with the effect of a two knot oppossing current. Said current caused me to misjudge our first tack into Prickly Bay causing us to tack back out. But this too was no problem because we were having so much fun Pam and I were fighting over the helm. This is a good sign. Even better was our second tack after going to school on the first one we nailed the second one and sailed right into the bay.
It took us awhile finding a place to anchor in the seemingly crowded bay. After getting chased away by an OAR that was uncomfortable with our presence we found a place on the western side of the bay. It wasn't the greatest spot and after talking Pam and I decided we would move to Mt. Hartman Bay the next day.
