Wifi and Internet Access Importance

06 September 2011 | Mt. Hartman Bay, Grenada
Jeff
One morning last week a friend anchored to the north of us. Then about ten minutes later he weighed anchor and moved to the south of us and re-anchored. I thought perhaps his anchor didn't take until a few minutes later he called me on the VHF radio. He asked if I was recieving a particular provider's wifi signal. I told him yes and that it was coming very strong. He was getting the signal but couldn't connect. Next thing I know he's weighing anchor again, this time moving to another bay entirely. This just goes to show how important internet access is these days and wifi connections are the way we cruisiers make our connection. It's not just for the obvious email communication it's for weather information. Weather information is vital during hurricane season. Also, I've been able to track Pam's flight progress during her trip back to the States by using the internet. So cruisers make anchorage choices these days based on protection from wind and seas, anchor holding and wifi availability. Ten years ago when we were here, there was no such thing as wifi so we were old school at that time just looking for protection and holding. How things have changed in ten years.
