Busy Day

09 December 2011 | Rodney Bay, St. Lucia
Jeff
We got to sleep at about 0130 this morning. It was an uneasy sleep since we were not able to set the anchor by backing down on it using the engine. We did try to back down the boat by backwinding the mainsail, but there was insufficient wind to accomplish it. This morning I went into Customs and Immigration to check into St. Lucia. On the cruiser's radio net this morning Pam asked if anyone had the name of a recommended mechanic. She got two recommendations and called the first one on the phone. While I was at Customs the mechanic told her he could come out to the boat shortly. As it turned out I could not check in in the morning, they were swamped with people from the ARC who were checking in after crossing the Atlantic. They told me to come back after lunch. So I went back to the boat to find the mechanic already there. He deduced that it was fuel related. Checked a few things and replacedmthe engine fuel filter, the water separator filter and bleed the air out of the fuel lines all the way to the injectors. After several trys, the engine came back to life. Roger, the mechanic, said he thought that the fuel was contaminated possibly with water and suggested that when I check the Racor filters for water that I also drain a little fuel out of the filter and check it. He also suggested that I change the filters a little more frequently and polish fuel as much as possible. All this for $100 US and before lunch, this was money well spent. After lunch I went back into Customs and made us legal. So the question remains as to when we will continue our passage to the US Virgin Islands. Not sure yet, hurt her hand yesterday and then lost her balance when the boat rolled hurting her side. I too hurt my ribcage on a boat giration. So we will continue when we recover sufficiently from our injuries. We also want sifficient time to test the engine before we continue. We'll see.
