Great Beat and Snorkle

24 February 2012 | Round Bay, St. John, USVI
Jeff
The morning of 2/21/12 we sailed off our mooring in Leinster Bay and beat out of the Narrows, which run between St. John and the British Virgin Islands, and had a great sail around the east end of St. John. When we sailed into Coral Bay on the SE corner of St. John we found SV Promise in Round Bay. There is a lot of old dead coral to avoid on the bottom of Round Bay. We anchored in a sandy spot but our chain did occasionaly drag across coral making a disconcerting noise. During our stay in Round Bay we went snorkling right off the boat, swimming over to the nearby reef twice with Dave and Colleen of Promise. Pam and I got some pictures of the underwater life and will post them as soon as we can. Of course life is not all play, we took advantage of the calm conditions in Round Bay to sand and repaint the windlass motor that was quite rusty. So, after pulling all the chain out of the chain locker onto the foredeck, I crawled into the cramped space and sanded the old paint off. After cleaning the surface as best I could, I then painted epoxy onto the surface. To do this I had to paint with the motor right over my face, causing a very uncomfortable feeling with the worry about dripping epoxy falling onto my face. Fortunately I got lucky and the drips that did fall missed me. Whew! If all goes well we plan to move to Coral Harbor today to check it out. Coral Harbor is a small village at the NW corner of Coral Bay.
