Rough Night Last Night, One More to Go
13 March 2012 | 8 Miles ESE of Nevis
Jeff
Last night was a good one distance wise, but we paid the price in comfort. To put it mildly it tested our resolve to continue on. But beating in a sailboat is like that sometimes it can be very uncomfortable with all the motion and very noisy with the banging of waves and the sounds in the rigging. Add to that that we were in the Anegada Passage, which can be a washing machine like it was last night. The waves were coming from at least two different directions and when the crashed together near our boat, or under it, it felt like an amusement park ride. In any case we made it through and tonight presents a different challenge. We are 36 miles west of Falmouth Harbor, Antigua having to deal with a blown weather prediction. We expected the wind to be from 060-070 and it is currently from 090-120. Basically it is from the ESE rather than the ENE. Additionally, there was supposed to be 15 knots of wind and we have had more like 5-10. So we are going to have to work hard tonight for that last 36 miles. Depending on how well we do tonight in the light wind we might make into Falmouth in the dark or we might not make it until daylight. Right now I can't predict it because of the fickle nature of the wind. Stay tuned, hope to update tomorrow if I'm not too tired.
