We have made some progress toward Puerto Williams and are under the 200 mile mark and nearly across 55 degrees south latitude. That is equivalent to about Ketchikan, Alaska. FYI Frannie has been as far north as Sitka, Alaska at 57 03'S so she has still been farther North than South. However, the climate here seems much harsher than that in Alaska as the lack of vegetation here will attest. What trees there are here are very stunted and grow with a definite west to east slant. The wind is pretty relentless from the westerly direction. We have been lucky and not seen wind much over 30k so far. My fingers are crossed.
Yesterday we crossed the Canal Cockburn and had to enter into the Pacific ocean and go upwind for about 15 miles. The swell and seas were a reminder of how nasty this place can be. Once again, it was not too bad. Once we turned into Canal Ocasion, we made our way sailing up to Caleta Breaknock, the quintessential anchorage in Patagonia and our first truly on Tierra del Fuego. We rounded the corner into this amazing tiny bay with towering granite peaks in all directions. Ned says that it is the closest thing he has seen to Yosemite. There was also a large French charter boat already anchored where we had planned to go. We managed to slide in next to them and spent the afternoon gazing around us and securing our lines.
Today the charter boat left and we were able to tuck in much closer to shore and out of the wind. We feel very safe with two anchors out and five lines to the shore. Maybe we are overdoing the "warping" as he wind where we are in only blowing 3 knots.
