May/June 2010

We've both arrived to The Elephant Boatyard, on the Hamble River to experience living and sailing 'Freedom' over the next few weeks. Charles flew out first on SA's "Freedom Day" Public Holiday quite by chance, and then when I checked out my flight date, I was also going to travel on Zambia's Freedom Day public holiday.... how about that for coincidence or just plain weird!!.........

The system works, Thanks Debbs!
Sooze,
03/04/2010, presently Port Owen

Still very new to this, learning by the seat of pants !! the box here asks me author/weather, I have answered the first bit, and weatherwise, Port Owen with the Western Cape of South Africa in general, is hot man!..... high 30's and into 40 degrees. Idiots making fires in very tinder dry areas, keeping our lads on the go in the Fire Service and otherwise keeping the sailors out in the bay/on the ocean, or in their pools! Thanks for the response, now I know how to pass on info. Now I need to work out the photo transfer bit. check you all later. Bye for now. Sooze

I don't know which is more impressive - the boat or the blog.

What are the plans once the refit is complete? I can arrange a stay at the Royal Prince Alfred YC in Sydney in a few months, if you wish.

Getting Ready
Sooze

Counting down the weeks now before we head off to the UK to check out our 45ft dream! She was not on the general scheme of things, but hey that's life, In fact if a friend of ours, (Patrick) hadn't had a birthday when he did, and hadn't had it on a beautiful boat called "Boa Vida"which jogged our memories of sailing past, to this day, we wouldn't be doing what we are!!!..... "Freedom of Hamble" became part of the family last summer in the UK when, having searched the internet on a "I wonder if" scenario, found the boat we had originally seen some 19 years ago at the Southampton Boat Show when Charles logged that he was already a Freedom owner and would enjoy a demo sail but wasn't in a hurry! now some 19 years later, we are about to get our demo sail for real..... howzat for destiny! We actually can't wait, the excitement is hectic. Mind you organising our life back home is manic, but we will sort it.

I am not sure how all this blog stuff works, so forgive any poor delivery.
and as for photo downloading, that is on the learning side of the skill thing! In the meantime, I have hopefully set this up, and will check it out over the next few weeks to see if I can improve. Bye for now. Sooze and Charles.

Round the Island Race

4.30am rather an early start for the good ship Freedom and her crew, most of whom were ex Cape Towners, Mel, Butch, then Pete, Andy and Mat. We joined hundreds of yachts in the Solent to await our start for the Round the Island Race. Beautiful morning with good breezes but cold. Lovely run down to the Needles then hardening up to go around, past St Catherines and on around where it got quite challenging with strong winds coming down off the cliffs. Racing got very close coming up the Solent from Bembridge, and in the end, Freedom got 7th in Class out of 49 and 102nd overall out of 1600 odd yachts. Not bad for a floating home!!! we had a great day, all exhausted by the end of it, so rocked into The Jolly Sailor for a good meal and lots of Badgers!!!
