The end of another adventure

Time to move on as we needed to drop Ian and Jess off in Kos for their flight home. There wasn't a breath of wind as we motored to Kos harbour which is very atmospheric under the old castle. It all felt very hectic in the town after a few weeks exploring the tiny, peaceful islands. We were treated to [...]

Stunning Aegean

It was 11 miles to Skala Patmos and an amazing broad reach sail all the way (almost!) - definitely what it's all about. The sea could've been flatter but it was as expected after the high winds. We went side to on the quay with a Finnish boat where it was very flat and peaceful, especially after the [...]

At last, we’re off!

And finally we were ready to go! The engine started first turn, we let off the lines and left Samos marina. We've loved our extended stay on Samos but we're not sorry to leave the marina which is very is unprofessionally run. We were joined on our first trip for ages by dolphins just outside Pythagorio. [...]

Very stressful final preparations

The engine was removed very efficiently and with great respect for the boat. It was taken to Zlatco's workshop for further investigation! They returned an hour or so later to clean up - very impressive and the engine bay has never looked so clean and shiny! It was very traumatic watching Freya having [...]

New Life!

10 April 2016 | Camerota - 5,143 NM
Still and Grey, but brightening
After negotiating the sharp turn and narrow exit in Ventotene we headed for Procida. It was so still we didn't even bother to undo the sails! It was a lovely motor passing Isola Ischia. Procida is a small island next to the glamorous Ischia but less touristy. We anchored in the bay next to the harbour and town where we had a great view of the town with its pastel coloured buildings spreading up the hill. The only snag was the wash from the many ferries during the day but they stopped for the night giving a nice peaceful sleep. We took our new dinghy ashore on its maiden voyage (which was successful) and explored town. A very pretty harbour front with winding streets leading up to the derelict prison at the top and stunning views over the whole island and Ischia behind.

Early in the morning we left for a long motor to Agropoli - again, lovely and sunny but not a hint of a breeze! This time we crossed the Bay of Naples passing Sorento and the even more glamorous Capri and the Amalfi coast arriving late afternoon. First impressions of Agropoli were lovely with the old town perched on a cliff above the port and the modern town having a real buzz as the locals came out with the sunshine for their evening stroll.

On route Paul found a problem when he did his usual engine inspection - it is worth doing on passage after all! The primary fuel filter was filling with yellow gunge - we'd acquired diesel bug. We've heard about it since we bought our first boat but so far had been lucky, but there it was. Both fuel filters were changed and thankfully the second was clear and so it appears to be contained as the engine is still running smoothly too. Although we don't want it you have to admire anything that can create life in diesel and proves it would be hard to wipe out life on earth altogether. You see documentaries about life deep under the oceans or in volcanic craters but I guess diesel isn't as romantic enough. "Its life Jim, but not as we know it."

On a positive engineering note, Freya's average speed and fuel consumption so far this year is around 20% better than it was at the end of last season. Its amazing what effect a clean bottom can have your performance.
