02 May 2022 | Kos - 8,924 NM

The end of another adventure

Time to move on as we needed to drop Ian and Jess off in Kos for their flight home. There wasn't a breath of wind as we motored to Kos harbour which is very atmospheric under the old castle. It all felt very hectic in the town after a few weeks exploring the tiny, peaceful islands. We were treated to [...]

Stunning Aegean

It was 11 miles to Skala Patmos and an amazing broad reach sail all the way (almost!) - definitely what it's all about. The sea could've been flatter but it was as expected after the high winds. We went side to on the quay with a Finnish boat where it was very flat and peaceful, especially after the [...]

At last, we’re off!

And finally we were ready to go! The engine started first turn, we let off the lines and left Samos marina. We've loved our extended stay on Samos but we're not sorry to leave the marina which is very is unprofessionally run. We were joined on our first trip for ages by dolphins just outside Pythagorio. [...]

Very stressful final preparations

The engine was removed very efficiently and with great respect for the boat. It was taken to Zlatco's workshop for further investigation! They returned an hour or so later to clean up - very impressive and the engine bay has never looked so clean and shiny! It was very traumatic watching Freya having [...]

28 March 2016 | Gaeta - 4,998 NM
Warmer and Sunnier
Easter celebrations started in Gaeta when posters appeared around town depicting the crucifixion advertising an event on Monte Orlando. I'm not sure what we expected but certainly not what we watched. It turned out to be a major Hollywood style epic with a huge cast including horses and donkeys telling the story of Easter and finishing with a very hunky Jesus being crucified on a floodlit hill! We didn't understand most of the Italian but could obviously follow the story and listened for key phrases while trying very hard not to join in with any Monty Python jokes! Quite spectacular in a small town car park.

Lucca and Anna, the brother and sister owners of the marina, invited us all on an excursion - above and beyond we thought. They took us all up into the mountains to the stunning Zompo lo Schioppo Nature Reserve and Waterfalls. The water gushed from a hole in a high cliff and after a huge drop tumbled down the mountains and through the very pretty forest full of lovely spring flowers. We then went to Civita d'Antino, a village surrounded by snow capped peaks which is famous for its amazing light and hence artists. There we had a wonderful slow lunch with numerous courses based on salt cod which were all delicious and finished with an Easter cake soaked in a local tipple - and, of course, eased down with plenty of vino di casa.

We all felt that Easter should be celebrated and so on Easter Saturday evening Tim and Tiff (Ride of a Lifetime) and Ron and Nancy (Mandala) joined us for drinks before going out for a fixed menu fish extravaganza in a local restaurant which, again, was really delicious and gave us courses we wouldn't have ordered otherwise. There were a few sore heads the next day! But as summer seems to be slowly showing itself we all met again the next day to visit the beach and enjoy a very colourful Aporal Spritz followed by a walk to a bar in the old town for another before a very lazy afternoon!

We enjoyed a weekend of rugby with England's victory in the 6 nations! Partly watched in the local bar, on Freya and with Tim (token Welshman!) and Tiff. A few days later we were able to watch our Grandson, William, compete in the Roslyn Rugby 7s live via YouTube. We still find it amazing that we can do that here!

Work on Freya has continued a pace with our foresail being returned, both sails refitted, the new rig tuned and the new nav lights sorted. We've also done exciting jobs like cleaning the toilet pipes, washed lines, serviced the engine etc. The weather is thankfully settling down and we're hoping to be on our way very soon...........
