Still having fun
22 March 2008 | San Blas
Gabriellas grandpa
I pulled into the estuary at San Blas because it's an easy access to town. There was a new dinghy landing with an attendant so I have to pay to have him watch the dinghy....I sure hate to pay for this service but it's all part of the cruising in Mexico. I carried my laundry about a mile to the lavanderia and dropped it off so I could get it back the next day for my departure to Mazatlan. There was a little bit of Semanta Santa celebration going on in the town square, but nothing close to what happens at the beach. There was a blow for 2 days that required our staying in San Blas so we won't get beat up in the nasty weather. I left San Blas the day after the big blow(against advise from a few people) and got about 20 miles up the coast when I decided it was just too junky to travel in. So I turned around and went back to Matanchen Bay on the outside of San Blas. I spent the night there and then pushed on the next morning. My friends on Boomerang left about an hour after me and later that morning they went flying on by at 3 knots faster than me. They have a Corsair F-31 trimaran that is really light and fast. They pulled into Mazatlan at 3am and anchored off the islands in front. Meanwhile on Mannasea I was chugging along at about 5 1/2 knots at 9pm when I hit something. It rattled my boat and I thought it was a log or board. My prop and shaft was vibrating so bad I thought I bent the shaft. After playing around in forward and reverse I determined something was still on the prop ans shaft. I had no other choice but to go into the freezing (66degrees) water to unsnag it. Here it is night time and I'm out about 12 miles off the coast and by myself....this is not a pleasant scenario. After I dove in and under the pitching boat with a knife in hand, I cut the lobster pot buoy and line off the prop shaft and got back on the boat to dry off and get on my way. after a few more hours of motor-sailing my engine was losing then gaining rpm's. So into the engine area to see what the problem is. I thought I was picking up junk from my fuel tank again, so I started to try and clear that out. In the process my Racor fuel filter fitting on the bottom broke off. So now I have fuel pouringinto the bilge and no back-up fitting for the Racor. So I found a screw that I could start in the plastic case and put liquid gasket material around that and sealed it off. So I limped into Mazatlan and docked at the Singuar facility for the next three nights. I could'nt get a Thermostat housing to replace the one that broke so I just put more gasket goop on the fibreglass and epoxy repair I did to that. I sure hope I make it all the way to Guaymas and then once there I can bring back all the parts I need to make it go again....until something else goes south.........
